RTX 5090 vs 4090: 32 GB vs the cheap workhorse
4090 is the cheap experiment. 5090 is more VRAM and a newer GeForce, still a consumer card on someone else’s host. I rent 4090 when 24 GB is enough and the host is verified. I rent 5090 when 24 GB is the wall and I still refuse datacenter money.

The result
Default: RTX 4090
Pick: RTX 4090
Stay on 4090 for most LoRAs and small serving. Move to 5090 when 24 GB spills and you will not pay for L40S or H100. Vet the host. Consumer cloud is not a cloud.
In brief
What to know before you pick
- 4090 is the cheap experiment. 5090 is 32 GB and a newer GeForce, still someone else’s consumer card.
- Host quality dominates the badge. Unverified meme prices are the trap.
- 24 GB is enough for most LoRAs. Buy 32 GB when 24 GB dumps, not because the number is newer.

Rent RTX 5090 if
32 GB is the requirement, GDDR7 is fine, you accept marketplace risk, and the 5090 row is on-demand not a screenshot.
Skip it if ECC requirements, multi-week pretrains, anything that needs NVLink or 80 GB.
Rent RTX 4090 if
24 GB fits. You want the deepest marketplace stock. Fine-tunes you can checkpoint. Anyone who will actually open the host page.
Skip it if 70B full fine-tunes, compliance, multi-GPU NVLink, uncheckpointable trainers.
RTX 5090
- 32 GB GDDR7 at 1,792 GB/s is a lot of consumer card
- Blackwell features without datacenter rent
- Deep marketplace stock vs B200 theatre
RTX 4090
- The floor price of useful CUDA
- Ada Tensor cores are enough for adapters

The host is the product
Consumer cloud is not a cloud. You are renting a GeForce on a host with a reliability score. I rent 4090 when 24 GB fits and I will open the host page. I rent 5090 when 24 GB is the wall and I still refuse L40S or H100 money.
Unverified hosts at typo prices will kill the run. Checkpoint. Then vet the host. Then look at the hour.
32 GB is the only reason to leave 4090
If the 7B or 13B LoRA fits 4090, stay. If 24 GB dumps, 5090 is the next GeForce, then L40S, then datacenter. Do not buy 5090 as a status card while 24 GB still holds.
ECC still does not exist here. Multi-day pretrain and production endpoints belong on A100 or H100, not on a 4090 you found on a bulletin board.
The trap
How this comparison usually goes wrong
Unverified hosts at meme prices. Mixing 4090 with L40S as if ECC did not exist. Buying 5090 because the number is newer while 24 GB still holds.
What I would do
The move
If the 7B or 13B fits 4090, rent 4090 on a verified host. If 24 GB dumps, look at 5090 then L40S. Datacenter cards if the job is the product.

NVIDIA RTX 5090
32 GB of GDDR7 on Blackwell, 575 W, no ECC, no NVLink. The marketplace favorite when 24 GB died and you still refuse Hopper rent. Treat it as a fast workstation GPU in a rented PC, because that is what it is.

NVIDIA RTX 4090
24 GB GDDR6X, 450 W, the marketplace default. Still the correct GPU for a shocking number of LoRAs. Still a gaming card in a rented box.

FAQ
RTX 5090 vs RTX 4090 questions
Is 5090 worth it over 4090?+
When 24 GB is the problem. Not when you wanted a status GeForce. The host quality still dominates the badge.
Should I rent 4090 instead of A100?+
For experiments you can kill, yes. For a production endpoint or multi-day pretrain, no. ECC and the host are the plot.
RTX 5090 vs L40S?+
5090 if you are still in consumer-cloud mode and 32 GB is the need. L40S if you want ECC and a board that is actually an inference product. Datacenter if the job is the company.
Is 4090 cheaper than 5090 in this catalog?+
Usually, on the from-price. Cheap is not the test if 24 GB spills. Confirm the live on-demand row and the host.
