B200 vs B300: stock first, then the extra HBM

Both are Blackwell. B300 is more memory and a rarer row. I do not pick B300 because the digit is bigger. I pick the SKU that is in stock and matches the bytes. Most teams who think they need B300 needed an honest B200, or an H100 that boots.

The result

Default: B200

Pick: B200

Prefer B200 when it is listed on-demand. Take B300 only when 180–192 GB is the wall and the B300 row is not a waitlist with a pretty from-price.

Rent B200 if

You have a Blackwell path, FP4 is real in your stack, and B200 is actually offered this week. Long-context serving that fits ~180 GB.

Skip it if Anyone who needed an H100 this week. Fine-tunes that fit 80 GB. Shops without a Blackwell software path.

Rent B300 if

The states or KV cache do not fit B200, you can name those bytes, and a provider will sell you B300 on-demand without a quote theatre.

Skip it if Everyone still shopping H100. Startups with a 4090-shaped job. Anyone who cannot name why 288 GB beats 141 GB.

B200

  • HBM3e at ~8 TB/s is a different memory regime than Hopper
  • NVLink 5 at 1.8 TB/s is why 8-GPU jobs stop looking like a network problem
  • Native FP4 is the inference lever H100 does not have

B300

  • 288 GB is a different class of “fits on one GPU”
  • NVLink 5 still at 1.8 TB/s, the fabric matches the memory
  • FP4 headroom above B200 if the stack keeps quality

B200 is the default Blackwell hour

I prefer B200 when it is listed on-demand. B300 is the upgrade when 180–192 GB is the wall and the row is live. Most teams who think they need B300 needed an honest B200, or an H100 that actually starts.

A from-price on a waitlist is theatre. We do not rank it as cheaper.

Name the bytes that miss B200

KV cache, optimizer states, a model you will not quantize. If you cannot point at them, you do not need 288 GB. You need a story for a slide.

GB200 rack talk is not a single GPU hour. Confirm GPU count, cooling, and whether the listing is a reservation in costume.

Hopper is still the off-ramp

If both Blackwell rows are waitlist, rent H100 or H200. Later silicon is a delay. It is not a plan.

The trap

How this comparison usually goes wrong

A B300 from-price that is waitlist-only. Mixing GB200 rack talk with a single GPU hour. Skipping H100 because Blackwell marketing is louder.

What I would do

The move

If neither row is in stock, rent H100 or H200 and stop pretending. If B200 is in stock, take it. Open the listing for GPU count and cooling. 1 kW is part of the product.

FAQ

B200 vs B300 questions

Is B300 worth the extra hour?+

Only if 180 GB is the bottleneck and the row is live. Otherwise you bought a waitlist with more HBM on the slide.

Should I wait for B300 instead of B200?+

Not unless the job is blocked on memory B200 cannot hold. Later silicon is not a plan. It is a delay.

B200 vs B300 vs H200?+

If Blackwell is waitlist, H200. If B200 is in stock and 180 GB holds, B200. B300 only when you can name what spilled out of B200 and the row is live.

Is B300 the same as GB200?+

No. Do not mix a rack story with a single GPU hour. Confirm the SKU on the listing.
